Homework#3: Topic Sentence/ Rhetorical Patterns

Read the article The Sexes: Anatomy of a difference. Then, (1) state the topic sentence of the reading. (2) Provide examples of three different rhetorical patterns.

    2.pound for pound, a woman can be as strong in the abdominal an leg muscles as a man because her relatively larger pelvis has plenty of room for muscle attachments. (cause-effect).
    Muscles depend on oxigen to work, the more oxygen you can get to them the more energy you have. (cause-effect).
    The problem is that it isn? Always clear which comes first, testosterone or the agresión. For example, its been found that alter a competition, a wrestler will have more testosterone in his bloodstream if he has won than if he has lost. (exemplification)

    #1 boys may owe their susceptibility to diases to the fact that they have only one X chromosome. The other, the Y, determines their sex and is the most basic difference between men and women.

  5. 1- Topic Sentence:
    “Women are, on the whole, more verbal than men. They are good at languages and verbal reasoning, while men tend to excel at tasks demanding visual-spatial abilities. In fact, along with aggression, these are the most commonly accepted differences between the sexes.”

    2- Examples of three different rhetorical patterns:
    A- “The oxygen factor is probably the greatest male advantage, but the difference between men s and women s time has been getting smaller, and some experts think that the best women will one day equal the best in events like marathons”. (Contrast)

    (Line 22 to 24). In endurance events like running and long-distance swimming, women actually do very well. Grete Waitz beat 11,705 men in the 1988 New Yor City Marathon; only 124 men managed to beat her. (Exemplification)

     There is clear correlation between male aggression and high testosterone levels; by far the majority of violent crimes, for instance, are committed by young men, whose testosterone levels are much higher than those of older men. (Example).
     Men are much more vulnerable than women in number of ways. Boy babies Inherit more birth defects and suffer more birth traumas, in childhood, boys have more accidents, and they are far more likely than girls to suffer from autism, hyperactivity, stuttering dyslexia……..(Listing)
     Words are tools for communicating with other people. (Comparison)

    Though there are not definite conclusions, science has come up with some fascinating new answers to these and other age-old questions about “la difference” (Paragraph 1, line 3)

    2- PROVIDE EXAMPLES OF THREE DIFFERENT RHETORICAL PATTERNS

    Exemplification:

    In fact, a woman, Margaret Murdoch, won the silver medal for rifle shooting in 1976. (Paragraph 3, line 19)

    Women have traditionally done better than men in English Channel swimming, for instance. (Paragraph 4, line 27)

    For example, it`s been found that after a competition, a wrestler will have more testosterone in his bloodstream if he has won than if he has lost. (Paragraph 9, line 57)

    Comparation-Contrast:

    And in sports where strength is not a factor – skydiving, parachuting, sharpshooting- men and woman perform and compete equally (Paragraph 3, line 16)

    a. A pesar de que la mujer tiene las piernas tan fuertes, los corredores más rápidos siguen siendo hombres.
    b. Las articulaciones de las mujeres son más flexibles y menos articulada que la del hombre, por lo que la mujer se destaca más en el patinaje artístico y ballet. Los hombres, cuya parte superior del cuerpo posee mucho más fuerza, le es útil, en deportes como el en el levantamiento y lanzamiento de objetos pesados.
    c. Las mujeres son, en general de mayores destrezas verbales que los hombres. Son buenas en lenguas, así como en razonamiento verbal, mientras que los hombres tienden a sobresalir en tareas que exigen habilidades visuales-espaciales.
